“The fire department never stops, and on Christmas Day it’s especially difficult when you see a displaced family,” said Battalion Fire Chief Joshua Johnson.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Teams were working to put out a fire in North Charlotte on Christmas Day.

This happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 2600 block of Lasalle Street near Beatties Ford Road.

Reports indicated that smoke was coming out of the house.

Neighbors alerted the person inside the house at the time of the fire. A total of four people were displaced as a result of the damage.

The fire started in an adjoining storage room and spread to the attic.

Charlotte Fire called the fire an accident, saying something combustible near the water heater may have started it.

The only person inside the house when the fire broke out was a sleeping teenager.

“I started to smell something. I didn’t know what it was, but I just got up and thought it didn’t smell very good,” said Justin Navaez.

The family has been displaced, including a 4-year-old girl who lost most of her Christmas presents in the fire.

“The fire department never stops, and on Christmas Day it’s especially difficult when you see a displaced family,” said Battalion Fire Chief Joshua Johnson.

In response, the firefighters decided to donate the Christmas presents they still had for the little girl to enjoy. Her mother, Shatasia Dunn, said she was overwhelmed with all the support, but grateful that she was able to surprise her daughter with a Christmas miracle.

“She just asked me about her presents, and I said, ‘Well I’ll see what I can save for you’, so she can’t wait to see what I can get home with. “said Dunn.

The Red Cross helped the family in their next steps.
