Burglar targeting Christmas presents shoots owners while fleeing – WCCO

BLAINE, MN (WCCO) – Blaine police say two homeowners were shot after catching a man stealing their Christmas gifts.

It happened just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night on the 8800 block of Jackson Street.

“I had just put the kids to bed around 7:30-8:00 p.m. and heard what sounded like a gunshot,” Dan Thomas said.

Thomas and his family have lived on Jackson Street for 5 years. What happened to their neighbors on Wednesday night put them on high alert.

“It’s definitely a little annoying. It’s one thing to have a burglary and another thing when the guns start getting involved in the situation,” Thomas said.

The man who lives in the house didn’t want to be filmed, but he told us he and his wife were gone for about an hour. When they got home, they noticed a bedroom light on that they normally don’t leave on. And then they saw a man running away from their house. It was then that he gave chase to the intruder, at which point the suspect turned and fired his gun. He grazed the man’s leg and struck his wife who was standing behind him. She was treated and released at a local hospital, but still has a bullet lodged in her leg.

“I can’t remember the last time we had an interrupted burglary where shots were fired. It’s certainly concerning for us, absolutely,” Blaine Police Capt. Mark Boerboom said.

Police believe the house was randomly targeted. The owner told us the suspect kicked down a door to get in.

He said they took credit cards, cash and a cell phone and the burglar moved all their Christmas presents outside the front door, making it look like he was about to break in. steal them. The police have established a perimeter but have not yet made any arrests. They say burglaries usually take place during the holiday season and they advise people to lock their doors and be careful of their neighbours.

“Keep your head on a pivot and do your best to enjoy the season more than anything,” Thomas said.

The police said if you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to call them.
