California man shoots family as they open Christmas presents, killing grandma and dad’s girlfriend: Police

PPolice have arrested a California man after shooting his family as they opened Christmas gifts, police said.

Austin Alvarez, 23, shot and killed his grandmother and his father’s girlfriend before turning the gun on his father on Dec. 25 as the family gathered to exchange gifts, the sheriff’s office said of Fresno County in a statement. Press release.

“During the visit, Alvarez fired shots at his grandmother (Magdalena Alvarez) and his father’s girlfriend (Meisa Rashid),” the statement read. “As Alvarez was leaving the house, he noticed his father in a parked vehicle. Alvarez fired shots in his direction, but did not hit him.

Deputies responded to residents of Reedley at around 1.45pm and discovered the two women with fatal gunshot wounds. They discovered that Alvarez had fled the house in his GMC pickup truck.

Deputies found Alvarez near the intersection of American and Anchor Avenues in Orange Cove and took him into custody, the statement said.

Investigators say the motive for the shooting is not known at this time. However, an investigation is continuing.
