Christmas gifts 2021: Freeport stores to buy unique gifts


FREEPORT – Local shoppers can avoid shipping delays and supply chain issues by shopping close to home for Christmas, finding something unique made in Pretzel Town or maybe even something something made with pretzels or with the famous nickname of Freeport’s snack food.

Shoppers can find all of this and more at local stores around town.

The visitor center, east of Freeport, has its annual gift shop, showcasing more than 15 local artisans as well as pretzel memorabilia, against the backdrop of a 12ft Christmas tree. Other pretzel merchandise can be found at Pretzel City Shop, Zealous Art Studio, and Sports Recreation and Apparel.

Gone Postal is more than a shipping store. They sell handcrafted items and a wide range of pretzel clothing. American Garage Art offers a selection of historic memorabilia such as Henney’s, Arcade, old brewery shirts and more.

Terry Werntz, a local artist, has created his “Freeport Memories Collection” of prints depicting favorite landmarks from Krape Park to The Wagner building.

The collection includes prints from the Carnegie Building, which is now City Hall; the Cranes Grove train trestle; the Blue Room at Scioto Mills, the Tabernacle at Oakdale Nature Preserve and a fan favorite – the illuminated Red Apple tree that has been lit for over 60 years at Christmas on Stephenson Street.

For the past 31 years, Marlene Korf and her daughter Brenda Korf have operated Country Girl Floral and Gifts. The mother and daughter duo work together to create unique flower arrangements against the backdrop of the home décor gift shop. The company is located at 411 W. Meadows Drive.

Other local favorites for gifts are Mrs. Mike’s crisps, popcorn and pretzels, all made in Freeport. There are also special canvas bags for sale.

Freeport also has specialty cafes like Nine East Coffee and Higher Grounds that can brew tea and coffee.
