Community comes together to deliver Christmas gifts to children

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Many children in need will be able to open Christmas presents, all thanks to an initiative by LEGACI Eats.

“Christmas is such a special time of year that it’s really important for kids to have a bright spot where they get what they want,” said LEGACI Eats volunteer Diane Mccallum.

For the second year, Diane is buying presents for the children this Christmas. “We wanted to do it again this year. Our grandchildren helped us and it was a wonderful experience for them,” she said.

Diane is one of the many volunteers who participate in LEGACI Eats’, Hark the Bells Initiative. Children write down what they want for Christmas, then volunteers buy items from their wish list.

“We received requests for 600 families this year,” said Jocelynn Easton, co-founder of LEGACI Eats. “We were able to find sponsors for 520.”

Wishes ranged from a new toothbrush to a tablet. “For some of our families, it comes down to choosing between their electric bill or gifts for their children,” Jocelynn said.

For many families, these gifts represent hope.

“You see some of these people getting these gifts, it’s almost like they’re getting a big breath of fresh air. Now they can really focus on their decorations, they don’t have to cancel their phone bill,” said Steve Easton, co-founder of LEGACI Eats.

There is still time to sponsor a family for Christmas. You can email [email protected] if you want to help.
