He says retailers are working hard to make sure there are products available during the Christmas shopping rush, but there are no guarantees, especially for popular toys and games.

“There will definitely be things to buy in December but the question is, what will they be? If you really want a particular brand or color, it’s a really good idea to do that as soon as possible.”

Harford’s advice is to “get out and do it early”.

Supplier Planet Fun is among the companies urging parents to start thinking about Christmas gifts now as the stock of toys remains stuck in container ships.

General manager Jeremy Kirk-Smith told Newshub that several popular brands were affected by the delays.

“The supply chain is an absolute mess from the very early stages of production. “

“Previously we could order goods and have them shipped in 90 days, then we were going to allow 25 days to get to New Zealand – now that time is at least six and sometimes seven or eight months.”

Kiwis are also encouraged to consider other gift ideas, such as gift certificates for experiences hosted by tour operators across the country.

Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) launched Gift Center on NewZealand.com which will also provide income to the struggling tourism sector, regardless of the country’s COVID-19 status.

TNZ says the website is “a treasure trove of ideas that are ready to be gifted to your loved ones for use.”
