Dad Jeff suffered a stroke at the hospital he works in in 2018, forcing his wife Karen to ask his parents for money to cover the cost of gifts for their 15-year-old son.
But that all changed when Karen, a lady from school, won the £ 1million jackpot in a raffle a few hours before Mother’s Day, using the numbers based on her birthday. his son for the lucky gain.
She said: “We’ve always struggled so my dad gave us money on Christmas to help with Callum’s presents.”
The win saw the modest couple trade in their cramped two-bed rental for a five-bed bungalow in Kesgrave, Suffolk.
Amazed that their entire previous home could fit in just two of their new bedrooms, Karen said, “When we moved in Jeff and I cried a bit.”
The family are now considering taking their son Callum on his first vacation abroad.
Karen told the Mirror: “Callum has never been on a plane. So we will be taking him to Portugal and then one day to Disneyland.
“My life now is making memories for Callum – although I continue to shop for bargains.”
Shortly after her victory in March, Karen said her son had “in a strange way, helped me deliver the most amazing Mother’s Day gift ever.”
But mum, from Ipswich, added: “I have no intention of giving up being a table lady.
“I love my job, school and all the kids.
“I always chose special numbers for myself, including my son Callum’s date of birth – the year and time – so I immediately recognized the winning numbers.
“What an incredible turn of events. “
Karen celebrated her victory until the early hours of Mother’s Day before calling Camelot at 9 a.m. to confirm her prize.
