WAXHAW, NC — Grayson Glienmo, a 13-year-old student at Marvin Ridge Middle School, will tell you that his mission this Christmas is to decorate his family’s front yard.

“I started repossessing and buying things when I was 8 years old,” Glienmo said.

Each year, Glienmo designs and builds the majority of light displays outside the family home. This year the exhibit includes 10,000 lights and a few homemade pieces that were constructed with items lying around the house.

“The arches on the left, those are made from old football goals that I found broken,” he said. “Then I have the star and the crosses that I made from two-by-fours.”

Glienmo said his motivation each Christmas is the joy the display brings to the neighborhood.

“It’s fun to see cars go by at night and to see people enjoying the lights you put up,” Glienmo said.

The 13-year-old starts thinking about his creations during the summer, and on Thanksgiving the lights come on faster than the time it takes to cook the turkey.

“I like having the most lights and the best display,” he proudly said.

Glienmo plans to expand his show to the backyard and hopes to enter a TV show competition for the best backyard Christmas light show.
